September: School Is in Session for All!

September offers the last part of summer and the first holiday of the school year, Labor Day. Labor Day honors workers who fought for fair wages, clean and safe working places, and time and a half for overtime. Labor Day reminds us of the importance of setting goals, working hard, and being able to push onward despite obstacles. For sure, whether schools open before or after Labor Day, students are often energized and eager to learn and participate in school, church and community activities, moving beyond Back-to-School sales to bonding with classmates and forging new friendships. We all are getting ready for autumn: longer days, cooler temperatures, and the seasonal holidays of fall and winter.

Students, are you ready to meet different teachers and tackle a challenging course load? Have you taken time to draft a personal essay, telling readers about yourself, what visions you have, favorite past times and hobbies, special talents and interests, obstacles or disappointments experienced, and triumphs?

After spring cleaning, summer break, and now returning to look for and achieve new goals, what are your short-term and long-term goals? High school seniors should have standardized tests including College Boards underway or completed, and all students should become acquainted with career and post-secondary plans and options. Always have a Plan B, and do not give into procrastination despite temptations to socialize with friends. September is upon us!

Parents and family members of the back-to-school bunch, support and encourage your loved ones, whether they are students or staff members. Getting into full swing requires consistency and positivity. I hope and pray September brings the joy of a productive and inspiring learning experience for us all.
