Words Matter: Rethinking How We Talk About College Access

On September 9th, I had the honor of joining Winston Barnes for a live segment on WAV 1070 AM/107.9 FM, an invitation extended by Georgia Robinson of Robinson Law & Mediation. What started as a radio conversation turned into a message I believe every family, educator, and community member needs to hear.

Here's what I shared:

1. Words Matter The language we use with young people carries weight. When we tell kids college is "an option," we give them permission to opt out before they've even explored what's possible. Our words shape how much of the future they believe belongs to them.

2. Exposure Is a Right, Not a Reward Every child deserves exposure to postsecondary pathways, not just the students we've already labeled "college-bound." Exposure opens doors that assumptions keep closed.

3. Furthering Your Education Is Not an "Option" Removing that word isn't about pressuring every student toward a four-year degree. It's about restoring urgency and access, so students make informed choices instead of choices already narrowed for them by the language around them.

At The Scholarship Plug, this is the work: making sure every student sees the full range of what's possible before anyone, even well-meaning adults, closes a door on their behalf.
